چکیده

Selective logging in the tropics results carbon emissions but also creates favourable environmental conditions for regeneration of tree species and recovery. We evaluate recovery biomass selectively logged forests impacted by timber harvesting on Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Fieldwork was conducted two annual cutting areas 2001 2009. Plots were established felling, skidding log landing sites. Regeneration functional groups characterized their growth, light demand, use, rates assessed. 68 54 genera 27 families found. Of these, 50% corresponded to marketable species. There a greater presence light-demanding seedlings both areas. Carbon five thirteen years after 50.6 Mg ha−1 62.7 ha−1, respectively, reflecting an gain 1.51 ha−1. Felling sites presented highest diversity contained quantity trees >5 cm DBH proportion shade-tolerant species, providing variety future crop trees. Low intensity practices that reduce impacts can result successful forest carbon.

Planktonic cyanobacteria of the tropical karstic lake Lagartos from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

The tropical karstic lakes on the Mexican Caribbean Sea coast are numerous. However, there is an enormous gap of knowledge about their limnological conditions and micro-algae communities. In the present study, surface water samples were collected monthly from November 2007 to September 2008 to provide taxonomical composition and biovolume of planktonic cyanobacteria of the lake Lagartos from St...

Orthobunyavirus Antibodies in Humans, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

We performed a serologic investigation to determine whether orthobunyaviruses commonly infect humans in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Orthobunyavirus-specific antibodies were detected by plaque reduction neutralization test in 146 (18%) of 823 persons tested. Further studies are needed to determine health risks for humans from this potentially deadly group of viruses.

Allelochemicals from Stauranthus perforatus, a Rutaceous tree of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Aqueous leachates and a CHCl3-MeOH (1:1) extract of roots of Stauranthus perforatus showed a significant phytotoxic effect on Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Echinochloa crus-galli. Bioassay-directed fractionation of the active organic extract led to the isolation and characterization of ten secondary metabolites, which included two pyranocoumarins [xanthyletin (1) and 3-(1',1'-dimethylallyl)-xa...
